Achieve Excellence in your Paper 1 - Essay Writing

Many students often find themselves stuck within the 23-29 mark range in terms of their essay scores, with no clear strategy on how to do better for paper 1. They find content preparation a bit too time-consuming. They lack mastery of the skills (or even awareness of the skills they need to do well). Most importantly, they feel frustrated with the lack of a clear and comprehensive strategy and framework to accelerate growth and make tangible improvement in their results.

If you have had such experiences before, you are not alone. Many of us teachers have also had similar experiences before, both as a student and also later on, as MOE teachers teaching at junior colleges in Singapore. The broad-based nature of the General Paper subject makes GP teaching a very subjective affair.

This is perhaps why having a comprehensive strategy that effectively tackles all the skills required for each component of the paper is of paramount importance. As ex-MOE teachers (or top tuition center teachers) with years of experience, we have constantly seek to refine our strategies to attain maximum efficiency.  Being graduates from top universities (e.g. Cambridge, Oxford, King’s London) also means that we are high-achievers who are seeking for sophistication in our materials, and also for perfection in terms of lesson delivery and to ensure that our students work towards effective application of skills.

To get a decent grade for GP, you will need to get at least 35 marks for Paper 1. While examples are certainly important, one needs to develop the right cognitive ability as well as more sophisticated writing ability to work towards a more complex and nuanced response for General Paper. We have divided the Paper 1 requirements into three major components:

Master your Paper 1 Skills - Essay Writing

Part 1: Developing the Right Cognitive Ability to Address Questions
To develop the right cognitive thinking, our teachers implement a thinking framework to ensure that 1) you do not wrongly interpret the question, and 2) you can work towards a more sophisticated level of analysis. There are four main aspects to this:

  • Polarity
  • Variable/topics
  • Conditions & Contexts – master the answering frameworks for the 9 different question types
  • Developing Complexities – The ‘GERPBLC’ Approach

As a student, you will master the strategies required to unpack question statements (e.g. to apply limits to the perimeters of the debate, or engage in broadening of key terms and issues), so as to have a fitting analysis that is both broad-based, complex and accurate.

Part 2: Having Good Points, Analysis, Philosophy and a Wide-range of Useful Examples
Macro Content Lectures: At TTT, we provide a monthly macro lecture with points and examples covering a key GP topic/issue. The notes also include some of the latest key theories and trends and this is especially useful for students who are aiming for 40+ in their essay component.

Micro Essay Outlines: Each year, we also provide about 30-50 micro content essay outlines to our students, which provide the points, examples, structure and analysis for popular GP questions. The micro outlines also serve to enhance the content picked up by students in the macro content notes, by looking at other possible questions or angles that can be tested for each topic.

Model Essays: We also provide model essays written by our teachers and top ex-students, for our current students to reference.

Summary Sheets: We also provide summary sheets for key questions, to help students to save time when preparing for their examination.

Part 3: Mastering the Skills needed to showcase Superior Technical Writing Abilitya
All students at The Thought Tailor will master the skills required to write an efficient paragraph, both in terms of organisation, clarity, and flow, as well as also analytically in terms of organising arguments for maximum impact. We also provide a high-impact vocabulary list (for the introductory, body, counter-argument and rebuttal paragraphs) to enhance your language.

Some of the things that we work on include learning how to:

  •   write an effective introduction comprising of a hook, definition, debate and thesis statement
  •   avoid writing terrible thesis statements (black or white, all or nothing type of reductionist statements). Students develop a nuanced statement that is more representative of the complexities of reality.
  •   introducing interesting and complex structures at the macro (essay-wide) and micro (intra-paragraph) level.
  •   connect your explanation and examples together in a coherent manner.
  •   present examples in a sharp and effective manner for a better analysis.
  •   use different combinations of examples for maximum effect – we teach 12 types of examples.
  • Introduce complex evaluation in your body paragraphs and final analysis to show depth and breadth in understanding.

Strengthen your Paper 2 Skills - SAQs, Summary & AQ

At The Thought Tailor, we provide students with the thinking approaches and answering framework to help students develop accuracy in their responses for the short answered questions, comparison questions (for the new JC1 syllabus 2023), summary and application question.

We provide a mixture of focused drills targeting each question types, as well as regular micro timed-practice to ensure that students are able to apply the skills under timed condition. Especially given that our recent ex-MOE teachers have taught at a range of schools including RI, HCI, NYJC, TJC, VJC, SAJC, DHS, TMJC, CJC, MI, we are also able to draw on varied school experiences, to develop the most accurate answer key for past-year A level comprehension questions.

Short-answer and Summary Questions
Learn the step by step strategies (including the thinking approaches, the text reading strategies, checklist to identify accurate contextual clues and answering frameworks) needed to address all 6 question types – IYOW, Literary Devices, Writer’s Craft, Author’s Purpose, Tone and Inferential Questions. With comprehensive scaffolding (e.g. discussing the 14 types of writer’s craft and the 6 types of author’s purpose questions), you can be assured of attaining perfection in your response.

We also provide useful strategies and a list of common words for paraphrasing to ensure that our students are able to tackle the summary component effectively.

For JC1 students, our recent ex-MOE teachers also offer accurate strategies and skills required to tackle the new comparison-type questions (can comparison between text 3 and 1, comparison between text 3 and 2).

Regular drills for each question type are also provided to ensure perfection. With the required MOE school training in exam-setting and marking for the new JC1 curriculum (A level 2024), you can be confident that our in-house drill practices would meet the required standard implemented in MOE schools in 2023.

Application Question
We teach close reading strategies to help students to break down the passages and to select the best application question arguments for your application question essay.

At TTT, students also learn how to respond to both single-text and double-text AQ (old syllabus), and also how to respond to a more general AQ task requirement (new syllabus) as well as the strategies, context, and evaluative strategies required to develop efficient AQ responses. With regular homework and micro timed practices, we ensure that students are able to apply the necessary skills under real exam conditions.

To enhance students’ learning, we also provide useful statistics and local contexts (in our SG Context and Examples Booklet) to help students to generate better examples and application analysis for their application question

Regular Practices and Marked Work
At The Thought Tailor, we provide homework after each session. Our teachers regularly mark the various assignments to help us to understand some of the issues that our students face. We also provide a checklist for our assignments, to help our students to gain a better understanding of the assessment criteria, so that they can augment their responses to perfection.

Before joining TTT, I was completely lost in terms of studying GP, and I thought it was impossible to score good grades. But now, I am glad I made the decision to join because the teachers (Dr. Chua and Mr. Russell) provided very good strategies. Their comprehension answering techniques were particularly useful as they categorised the different question types and provided various answering frameworks.

I used to fear GP because I have never really fared well in English in secondary school. Lessons at TTT changed that, with wonderful content notes, essay outlines with useful points and examples. Mr Russell and Dr. Chua also introduced various theories and philosophies that I can use to write complex essays. I am glad I joined TTT early in J1, as it gave me a good foundation for GP.

Initially, I really struggled with broadening my essay ideas and exploring deeper concepts. TTT has definitely strengthened my ability through a systematic framework of defining keywords, examining assumptions, and looking at further complexity and relevant theories (i.e. social contact). TTT places great emphasis on ensuring students truly internalise what the content is about, instead of merely memorising topic sentences and examples. TTT has made GP more meaningful, enjoyable and eye-opening.

Lessons at TTT helped develop our skills in the multifaceted areas of GP. They help us increase the complexity of our essays and make our essays stand out from our peers. Both teachers are highly experienced and their frequent check-ins have certainly served to bolster my confidence in the subject. Overall, I am proud to admit that TTT has played a huge role in improving my GP grade.

Mr Russell is the best GP teacher I have ever had (even considering the strength of the VJ GP department). I vividly remember after my first lesson, I was inspired by the evaluation and theories (such as Foucault’s Governmentality) he taught, and I immediately wrote an essay. The night before my A levels Paper, Mr Russell took the initiative to check up on me and even arranged an impromptu consultation. Thanks to TTT, I secured an A for A level GP.

Mr Russell’s lectures on politics, national identity and globalisation were really informative and interesting. The notes included many points and examples that can be used for essays, as well as some essays written by Mr Russell himself during his uni days! His comments on my work helped me to better understand and improve my weaker areas. I am grateful for his help in getting an A for A level GP.
