Overall Strategy

The fastest and easiest approach to score A1 is to focus on Paper 2, with the goal of scoring 40. It is easier to score well there compared to essay writing and the weightage of each mark in Paper 2 is the highest (0.7% per mark). To achieve that, we ensure that our students minimally score 13/15 for Summary Writing.

Which Continuous Writing Essay-type to Specialise in?

Subsequently, we believe that students should only focus on Argumentative Essays when attempting the Continuous Writing component because it is a good foundation for those aspiring to take General Paper in Junior College; Paper 4 Oral component, in the recently updated syllabus, is basically a spoken Expository and Discursive essay with some personal anecdotes.

Acing Situational Writing?

Most students can score well for task fulfilment, hence the differentiator is on the language. Deliver beyond the tasks and details given. Besides fancy vocabulary, the hallmark of the best situational writing is one where it feels real. Curating backstories, leveraging on subtleties and providing rich details for justification such that every paragraph is purposeful and integrated. Think of the context paragraph as the introduction of the story, while your response is the body of the story, and your concluding paragraph is the transition to the finale. As you are writing, consider the perspectives of the author (you), the character in the story, and the harsh critic of the story. Become Spielberg.
