Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why do I need Secondary English tuition

Here at The Thought Tailor, we firmly believe that Secondary English tuition is absolutely indispensable to supplement your learning and education. Our highly proficient and adept tutors can tailor lessons to fit your specific needs, addressing areas where you might be struggling or require additional practice. This personalised approach ensures that you focus on the aspects of English that are most relevant to you. Additionally, the competency level required to master English at the Secondary level is an enormous leap from the Primary level, and English tuition will go a long way in helping you bridge this seemingly daunting gap. Lastly, Secondary English tuition is also vital to help you strengthen your fundamentals and establish a firm foundation in English before progressing on to English at the Junior College (JC) level.

It depends on the teacher, whether the teacher has robust and updated notes, or the competence to substantiate all fronts. The Thought Tailor provides curated guidance on all the skills required for excelling in O-Level English, such as essay structure, argument development, and specific drill sets for Comprehension and Summary. Our individualised attention catered to all your personal needs. This will surely help you boost Secondary English exam performance without a doubt.

Absolutely! English is more than just a language. It also encompasses cognitive capacity, logical thinking, and reasoning skills, all of which can be honed with time and diligent practice. Regardless of your past or present foundation in English, your future will be one of greatness with us.

There might be different nuances within each essay question, so memorising is not the best strategy to pull your grade up to an A, but it can be useful to expand your vocabulary and improve your writing fluency

There are endless ways to take your English proficiency to the next level. You can start with reading daily news articles, keeping yourself abreast with current affairs and also developing your own opinion on various societal issues. Additionally, as you come across various articles or English essays, you can hone your critical thinking skills by practising questioning assumptions, analysing arguments, and evaluating evidence. Lastly, coming up with a one-stop vocabulary list and committing them to memory is key to strengthening your proficiency in English. Here at The Thought Tailor, we will guide you in the above processes and ensure that you are able to grasp the subject competently.

While both papers are equally essential to help you score well in English, Paper 2 is definitely more important than Paper 1. In Paper 2, 1 mark is equivalent to 0.7% of your total grade, compared to 0.5% in Paper 1. Additionally, Paper 2 is easier to score too!

At the Secondary level, narrative and descriptive writing essays are hard to fail, yet hard to excel. However, this will do you no good as you would eventually have to progress to argumentative and expository writing at higher levels like Junior College. Besides, with a limited vocabulary, such essays are more forgiving on the vocabulary and let your logic take centre stage. Hence, we encourage students to practise argumentative and expository writing in Secondary school which reveals greater maturity of your thoughts.

At The Thought Tailor, you will develop critical thinking, JC-level essay writing techniques and comprehension skills, mastering the ability to analyse and discuss complex issues from varying viewpoints. We provide a plethora of content lectures, essay outlines, drill sets and even learning journeys to complement your learning from all angles.

It depends. There are many different types of English teachers in the industry, varying in experience, preparedness and intellect. Our teachers at TTT are passionate, award-winning MOE-trained teachers, with decades of experience teaching O-Level English in a wide spectrum of schools, including RI, HCI, NYJC, VJC, CJC, TJC, ACJC, SAJC, ACSI, Nan Hua High, RGS and ACS Junior. Our teaching and research faculty are also graduates from prestigious universities that you are aspiring to study at, with the required training (Master’s and PhD) in EL/GP-related fields of English literature, politics, global studies and sociology.
