Exam Format

The examination consists of two parts:

What Examiners Are Looking For

Understanding this will allow you to identify the expectations of a distinction student, allowing you to identify your weaknesses and work on them.

These are the main points that examiners are looking for when assessing you. It can be simply boiled down to fluidity, clarity, ability to present your ideas, in an engaging way.

  1. Pronunciation and Enunciation

The fundamentals that lead to your success in an oral examination lies in pronunciation and enunciation. Without perfecting or at least having a general understanding on how to read in a clear and accurate manner will undermine all of your performance in the other aspects of the examination.

This simple exercise is convenient and requires little to no additional setup to do. Just simply reading-aloud using any passage is enough to acclimatize you to reading words that might not be read aloud regularly, this can help you prevent any accidental trips during the examination. By doing this regularly, it will improve your fluency and pronunciation, thus reinforcing your fundamental speaking skills to prevent pulling down other components.

Take extra note of punctuation marks which will also affect your fluidity and clarity. Pauses are important also to set the tone of the passage, making the delivery of your point and ideas more robust and expressive.

     2. Tone of Voices and Expressions; Pace and Rhythm of Reading

Having a proper tone and expression will help you reach the next level in securing a high grade for your oral examination. By having good expression and intonation, you are keeping the conversation engaging for the examiner, which will pull your marks up.

Media sources such as the news, speeches, documentaries and podcasts are excellent sources of natural conversation or proper intonation examples as they are speaking at a professional level, designed to keep its viewers on the hook and engaged.

Get familiar with the proper expressions and sentence structure and phrasing, this will help you with your personal response section by training your spontaneous thinking, while exposing you to more general knowledge.

Recording yourself can help you pinpoint your weaknesses during reading aloud, or during a personalized response section. Important things to take note of are your lapses in pronunciation or enunciation, as well as any potential ramblings that strays away from the topic.

This is also good practice for you to simulate an exam setting, albeit might not be as stress-inducing or nerve wracking as the real exam itself.

     3. Ability to Provide Individualized Responses.

The final stretch for students to achieve that distinction for their O-Level English Oral Examination is during the spoken interaction section. It is critical that you are able to provide good individualized responses and opinions for this section, so that you stand out from the rest of the others in front of the examiner.
